IYM Online with Chorus

IYM Online was first launched in response to COVID-19 in 2020. Due to being in lockdown, the residential programme could not go ahead. Instead, our providers presented to our participants via Zoom. It was so popular (with 180 applications for only 100 places!), we decided to continue to offer an online version of our programme in the April school holidays.
Our sponsor for the online programme is Chorus. Chorus is New Zealand’s largest telecommunications infrastructure company. They are responsible for building and maintaining the internet network throughout the country.
Females are massively under-represented across the technology sector, including telecommunications. At Chorus we’re all striving for a fair, inclusive and equitable culture where differences are our strengths and everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Part of this is making sure we support organisations who are doing the mahi to encourage diversity of people into STEMM careers, and this is where partnerships with the likes of IYM come in. We want to be part of the kōrero today that inspires people to choose us in the future.

IYM Residential was first held in 2017. The 6 day residential camp is based at Silverstream Retreat, in Lower Hutt. The participants are transported around the Wellington region and visit a large variety of STEMM based workplaces. A highlight of the week includes the Parliamentary reception, hosted by local Hutt politicians in the Grand Hall of the Beehive. We also find time to go bowling.
The majority of the cost per student is sponsored by local Rotary clubs and businesses. Participants will have the chance to meet and thank their sponsors during the programme, and are asked to send them a thank you letter afterwards. Those sponsored by Rotary Clubs are also invited to speak at a Rotary meeting.
