The IYM programme was designed to encourage young women to explore science, technology, engineering, mathematics and high-tech manufacturing (STEMM).
Hutt City Rotary Club were looking for a project. Along with the Hutt City Council, who at the time were investing in the local STEM infrastructure of the area, came up with the idea of a programme specifically aimed at young women in the Hutt area. Over time, we have increased our programmes to include a nationwide Online programme, and an on-demand version, IYM Anytime.
Why focus on young women?
Women are under-represented in nearly ALL areas of STEMM.
Of the 27% of women in technical jobs, only 4% are Māori women and 2% are of Pacific Island heritage. Areas such as digital technology, physics, computer science, and engineering have significantly low rates of entry to university courses and the workforce.
There are more CEO’s of international businesses named “John” than there are female CEO’s in total.
